Formula 1 - New engine regulations for 2013
I have just come across this on our BBC news website.
It is saying that plans are in place from 2013 to replace the V8's used in
F1 now, with smaller 4 cylinder turbocharged engines. They say they will be
1.6 engines, but how will they then be able to keep them at 750hp.... which
they do plan to do?
Surely this cannot be right?
"From 2013, cars will use new 'green' engines to improve sustainability. These will
be four-cylinder 1.6-litre turbos with energy recovery systems and fuel restrictions,
with the aim of increasing efficiency by up to 50%."
So will this mean manufacturers like Cosworth can shine afterall, they were good at 4 cylinder turbo engines once?
BBC Sport - F1 - Formula 1 will announce radical rule changes for 2011 and 2013

The 1.6 litre four cylinder engines will be turbocharged and produce about 600 hp. This will be combined with a more powerful KERS system of 150 hp (giving a combined output of 750 hp) and less draggy ground effects downforce. The engines are exepected to run to 12,000 rpm and although no boost limit have yet been decided there have been talk about a 3 bar limit but the speed limit was then expected to be 10,000 rpm. The engines will be allowed to use direct injection and they will probably be fuel flow limited at around 100 kg/hour. The regulation changes is expected to reduce fuel consumption by about 35% and might also interrest a few manufacturers to return to the sport as engine suppliers. Honda and Porsche are two possebilities, and McLaren might decide to produce their own engine.
Back in 1988 before the turbo engines were banned, the 1.5 litre engines used then was able to produce 680 hp using no more than 2.5 bar boost and running to a speed of 13,000 rpm.

Yeah I read some information on the earlier engines being 1.5 litre, but I was more interested
in the reliability of these? I mean, tuning a 1.5 to that level, even with Kers, will they not be a lot
more problematic to run? Less reliable?
I am very interested, I personally prefer small cc turbocharged engines, but still.... What about
lag? I presume this will be dealt with, but I wondered how?
Thanks Johan

They are allowed four engines per season and driver so the life expectancy of the new engines have to improve. With a turbocharged engine the peak cylinder pressures are obviously going to be higher so the engine have to be designed for that, for instance Hondas RA168E from 1988 reached about 170 bar, but the inertial forces are going to be lower given the lower engine speed.

I'm looking forward to that. The current engines technology of pneumatic valves were never used in street cars, there must be a reason for that. i think f-1 should stick closer to what is currently used in street cars so can develop new technologies we can actually use.

Group B, Turbo F-1. Not bad at all.
I read that they are going to use V6 engines and not 4 bangers anymore though. That's cool with me as long as boost comes back :D

To make F1 interesting they need to bring back some sort of danger, its too controlled, to much like a procession. Dull as anything to watch.
They should atleast have a round where all the current drivers do a race in an old late 80s F1 car, which of course will never happen

I totally agree, what we need in motorsport is to NOT stick to "how it always was OR should be" but instead make motorsport a way for car manufacturers to improve on deisgns that has practical use - if we can make that happen, we will get awesome improvements in production cars pretty fast.
