I am looking for some help for a mate of mine who has just bought some German licence plates for his S3. I am interested too, as i want some for my BMW. Because the UK is part of the EU we believe that we can have our licence plates made up with German fonts and they will still be legal in Great Britain.
Basically we need to know where to find a copy of the Registration mark/plate legislation for Germany. If anyone could help us, that would be superb!
White rear plates - apparently legal, as long as theyre reflective last time i heard, there was nothing in writing that said the plates HAVE to be yellow on the back.
German plates - ive had both German, and swedish plates on my motors, now. apppparently, theyre legal in any coutnry, as long as the font is correct, to that plate, and as long as they have their respective country on - i.e if your in the UK, you have to have GB, not S or D etc. this is becuase theyre part of the EU, and as long as they are, then theyre sort of legal, its a whole big grey area
i think they should jsut have it like they do in Sweden - your aloud anything, as long as its the correct font!
Then in the Isle of Man, all cars must have MN, or MAN on them, and you only have to pay £60 for a private plate!!! as long as it has MAN or MN on, hence Rich's RS4 MAN plate on his S4! superb!

You are not allowed anything in Sweden, they are actually quite strict. You are only allowed to have the plates issued by the government, some people have stickers and smaller plates in the front of the car (very few cars have exceptions for the small plates if the forn doesn't allow a large plate, Evos are among those cars) The people with the stickers and plates not issued by the dmv get fined for it. The fine is (or used to be) lower for no plate in the fron at all compared to a plate not issued by dmv.

in the uk, they have to meet certain rules, which means alot of people have strange fonts, and numberplate screws to make one thing look like another.

Yep it is true that you can buy those from the dmv in Sweden, don't know how much they are now but you buy them for a period of time and the money goes to a fund for traffic accident victims.
perhaps i`m hanging a little bit, but i do not really understand what you mean?! You want to have german plates on your car? With the country definition ("D") on it? Or do you want to have the german font on your GB-Plate? Perhaps i can find the requirements for the german plates here, but then they will be written in german - for sure :-)

ok i understand, GB - plate with german fonts. Do you have pictures of that? And now you need the legislation for german registration marks to find out about the right font-style, or why do you need the german legislation?

I think your plates are printed plastic ones, aren`t they? As you know we got reflecting sheet metal plates...
Yeah thats what i want really, i am not looking to have 'D' on the plates, but then i am not looking to use our 'GB' either.
I would basically like two white plates on the bmw with no country mark and the german font. I will see if i can find a website to show you what i mean. Also if you do manage to find the regulations for german plates, its perfectly fine if they are in German :)

Ok, i just talked to my friend who`s printing that stuff. He tlold me that we only have the one`s with the country code on it. That meas with the "D". But i think you know quite well how to use plate shears?! ;-)
If you want to, it`s no prob at all to print your letters on a german plate. The price is only the shipping to england for you my friend ;-)
Send me the letters (with spaces please) and your address and you will soon get that stuff...
