Rally Cars
Hey guys,
A friend of mine is looking at getting into the rally scene and I'm trying to convince him to allow me to be his co-driver (so there's a little incentive for me here).
Basically trying to find a decent car to start out in and was wondering if any of you had some decent websites that may be worth reading, know anyone who's selling a fitted/prep'd car or anywhere to obtain such a vehicle.
Had a brief conversation with Johnathan on Saturday about this, checked out ebay (quite useful) and the autotrader.
Anything at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

you'll probably find to compete you will need to pass a competition liscence. and this includes being a co-driver.

Thats a good point actually, although to accomplish that would be a wicked cool feeling!
Knowing what group/level you two want to compete at also would influence the car you buy, because i would not want to buy a fully prepped one, hand over loads of cash, and then find out it wont pass technical because the rollcage is wrong or something.
I know the UKD1 rules for instance changed a while ago. It stated that the roll cage had to go through the back of the dash board, instead of the bars curving around the front of it like most had fitted. Not meaning to discourage you mate, it would be ace to do it, just make sure you know what the crack is
;)

I totally agree with what Johnathan has to say and will add a bit.
I personally would buy something that both of you are keen on working on. Mostly because starting out, you and your driver (unless you guys have $$$$$) will be doing all the repairs and maint. yourselves. This said, its better to work on something yourr familier with (aka. volvo for me) than to buy a prepped car that either of you know anything about. Just my 2c.

I've taken into account the licence, something that was already on my mind.
You're right Johnathan, I do need to look into it in more detail, but I have somewhere to start now.
MacGyver - That's brill thanks.
Cheers guys

Ask yourself this question first.
Do you really trust your friend too 100% when rallying ?
He also needs to trust you too 100% - not to 99,99%
I personally don´t trust anyone that much.
I´m even a little scared when riding in the passengerseat with a
proffessional driver.

Good point. I wouldn't be getting involved if I didn't trust him 100%
Thanks for the input.

FOr rallying, Id go for a subaru wrx or a lancer evoultion, and in the UK I know you have them in all years and models, also the ford escort cosworth comes in a promising awd setup.

The trouble with the Escort Cosworth (i presume thats what you mean), is you tend to pay for the badge rather than for the car, or at least more money than you would for other worthy rally cars like the WRX or Lancer in that class.
I think there aim is not soo high though as far as competing in a class where a WRX would be appropriate, although i am not sure about that!

Yeah the cosworth, dont know as much about them as Id like, we dont even get them here. But I knwo they made a 2 door coupe that was 4wd, in fact they used it in getaway in stockholm 2, and those came with water injection from the factory, thats some factory engineering I tell ya.
But if they are a tad expensive compared to thee vo's, then id go with the evo all the way, they are easy to work on and aprts are always readily available since other mitsus share some of them. Hell I never worked on a subaru but may be the case for them too.
Damian.
