Quality (octane) on Gasoline in different countries ?

Hello PPL !

I have a question that I've been thinkin of a few years...

In Sweden we have 95, 96 and 98 octane Gasoline.

In a couple of years the Swedish gasolinecompanys will cut out the 96 and 98 octane and only be selling 95 octane gasoline. The reform has alreday started and some pumps only selling 95 octaned gasoline today.

What quality (octane) is the most common in your country and why ?

//Best Regards, Patrik "PH" Larsson.

Here in Belgium, you can have 95 & 98 octane at almost every pump.
I don't now why :)

Are you sure about this? Cars are made to be run on 95+ RON and using a lower quality fuel will cause them to lose power and possibly affect the emissions.

Over here it's 95 as the tax levy on higher quality stuff is quite steep. That and most people are driving small econo-boxes that run fine on 95 so.

IIRC you can still get 97 octane petrol in the north, well handy for the track days up there.

I was just thinking that myself. Also, some cars are actually designed from the factory to run on higher than 98RON Fuel. Turbo Cars especially, if forced to run 95RON only could suffer from 'knock' big time?

Why would Sverige restrict sales to 95 Only? Here also we can have a choice of 95 & 98 at just about every pump.

IIRC cars must be able to run on 95 without causing damage, at least euro cars. I think the OP is confused, all I've seen is that 96 will be scrapped due to little demand for it.

Cars brought in from Japan can have trouble running on Irish fuel as they're generally set up for 98+ from the factory. Most people here go for a remap or a full after market ecu, like I'm forced to do :(

Yeah those are the ones i was thinking about :)

(for peoples education)

I think as long as your car (excluding yours because its jap, IDMUD), can run on 95ron without causing damage as you say, people should not worry so much. Higher RON fuels are said frequently to give higher power gains, which is essentially rubbish. Using a higher ron fuel if you dont need to is simply a waste of money.

If a car was mapped for 98ron though for instance, like yours, 95 would obviously be a hinderance with problematic emmisions and loss of 'potential' power, due to knock. So if Sweden were to get rid of everything Patrik, then i think people would have problems .. Just getting rid of 96ron when there are 95 and 98 available though would make much better sense.

IDMUD, do you have shell optimax over there, also if i stand in my garden and shout over the sea, can you hear me .. ;) (ie: i cant believe i dont know soo much about ireland when i can see the place from here)

Regards ' JB

We have V-power (which is what optimax is being rebranded as). It's still 95 ron but with their special "cleaning" thingies in it. As far as I know there's no 95+ being imported so that esentially leaves us all up shits creek :(

I can't blame you, who'd willingly want to learn about a nation of drunks and knackers (no Irish peeps here so I can get away with saying stuff like that ;) )
