Okay then, time for my ongoing project to come on zatzy, to see what you all think. The car is a BMW 320i SE, which is fitted stock with the 6 Cyliner 2.0 24v engine.

In standard form the engine should put out about 150hp. Although its not as much as the bigger engines (325 / 328), it still has its uses. I am aiming for 300hp, but whether i manage to do that is another thing.

The engine is not fitted with Vanos, which is BMW's variable valve system, but this is what i wanted. It means the range or torque should be effective at the point the turbo will be at its best .. sort of. This project will not receive lots of shiney new parts, instead i want to modify, build and develop from what i have. The car will be getting a full respray shortly, before it goes to the nurburgring in August.

CO level at idle speed: 0.5-1.5 Vol %

Lowering Springs (done -50mm)
Custom Exhaust Manifold for Turbo (waiting for parts from sweden)
T3 Turbo (upgraded by sponsor GBTurboSolutions)
Intercooler (not chosen yet)
Pistons Reducing (lower compression)
Standard head Porting and Polishing (due soon)
Supra TT RZ Fuel pump (Aquired Denso pump)
injectors from a 328i or 535i (535 seems more appropriate)

homemade heat shields
ecu remap (may have to source one from a 3.0 as ignition will need retarding)
Vents in bonnet (///M3 GTR style)

Okay here is the idea behind the engine conversion .. in picture form

and this is how far i have got with it..

this was a pain to get off

bottom end stripped down. I found bits of plastic inside the engine, and in the oil pickup, meaning something had brocked before and no-one had noticed. this engine was running before i removed it.

then i got the block stripped down and cleaned.

then it was simple cleaned, old core plus removed and painted ready for building back up again.

I have had the pistons skimmed to my requirements now, and will be fitted back to the engine soon. The idea was to lower the compression but without making the pistons useless. After speaking with Saabjohan, it seems that they have turned out pretty well. The piston crown should be about 7 - 10% of the piston diameter for it to be thick enough to withstand boost.

Piston diameter = 79.5mm
Piston height (top of crown to bottom of skirt) = 61mm
Piston height (inside measurement to bottom of skirt) = 55mm

55mm minus 61mm leaves a 6mm crown. With the diameter being 79.5mm, this means that if the crown were to be 10% of this, it would need to be 7.5mm thick, and the lower 7% would be 5.56mm. This means that my crown is within safe (ish) limits at 6mm

The next plan of action is:

1. Fit piston rings and bearings and get the crank re-fitted.
2. Port and polish the head
3. Fit the head with Group A gasket (copper)
4. build custom manifold, set timing up.

This is the newer fuel pump. The person i bought it off said that it came from his Supra RZ, which should be good for about 350hp, but i am unable to confirm this yet.
