Where the Focus ST would push wide, the RS grips and goes with the efficiency of a true supercar. While the meaty steering keeps you informed with what’s going on, there’s none of the playful handling traits of a hot hatch.

Citat:
Jeremy Clakson:
"I have to say that even when the weather is awful, the grip and poise are excellent. Better than excellent. I can't imagine an Evo X is going to pull away.

But there's no getting away from the fact that the torque steer is still there. I suppose it's a consequence of putting 300 horses through a system that also has to deal with the steering. It's physics. Get used to it. It's worth it."
It is Porsche Cayman-fast in a straight line and, even more impressively, does not feel turbocharged. There is no lag, an instant surge of shove almost always available.

The new model's steering is a lot quicker than the ST's, with just 2.3 turns lock-to-lock and is superbly accurate. In fact, until you get familiar with it, you have to measure your inputs carefully to stop the responsive front-end from darting towards the apex too quickly.

But torque steer - even with 300bhp going through the front wheels - has left the building. Throwing the RS around the mountain roads above Nice, there was no evidence of it while cornering.

The only time there was hint of torque steer was when we pulled across a white line to overtake a car on a very short straight. The combination of full power, steering and low traction gave a tiny tug at the steering wheel for a fraction of a second - and that was it. So, yes, the problem that's plagued front-drive performance cars for years really has been solved.
