"The Focus RS is an absolute blast to drive – it's ludicrously quick point-to-point. Front-wheel drive was definitely the way to go; there’s so much front-end grip that you just don’t need driven rear wheels and we’ll gladly take the consequences of that lively front end for the extra agility that the lighter two-wheel drive set-up affords."
"OK, so I didn't beat Stig up the mountain - I would dearly love to tell you otherwise and wipe the uncaring smugness off his helmet - but I would have done if I was, by some quirk of twisted space/time, driving both cars at the same time. And if the route had contained absolutely no straights, because the straights were where the GT pulled out the supercharged V8 joker and did the Millennium Falcon bit. BUT, the big news was that I was closer than anyone, including myself, imagined. So much so, that even The Stig itself had the good grace to stare in my direction with what I'm going to assume is bemused surprise when we arrived at the top within a second or so of each other."
Jeremy Clakson:
"I have to say that even when the weather is awful, the grip and poise are excellent. Better than excellent. I can't imagine an Evo X is going to pull away.
I know for a fact that on a damp road, it would leave my CLK Black for dead. It's that good, and not once did I encounter any of the dreaded tread shuffle that seems to plague the testers on other magazines.
But there's no getting away from the fact that the torque steer is still there. I suppose it's a consequence of putting 300 horses through a system that also has to deal with the steering. It's physics. Get used to it. It's worth it."

"A front wheel drive configuration was chosen because of the clear performance advantage. Lotus Engineering has been involved in the design and tuning of suspension systems of all kinds. Their experience has shown them that a front wheel drive design is always faster over a given course if you compare two chassis with the same weight, power and tires. The advantages are traction and controllability. The weight is mainly over the wheels that drive and steer, making the existing performance very accessible and predictable. The disadvantages are torque steer, bump steer, steering kickback and road harshness. These bad habits are accentuated by high power output, which is a definite requirement for a Lotus. Lotus felt certain that they had the elements of a new design that would solve all of the challenges that front drive presented and provide a true Lotus feel on the road."
